This past March, Suraj joined me for concert at House Concerts Delhi on a beautiful rooftop terrace in South Delhi. The audience was mostly young Indians who had little exposure or interest in classical Indian music. It was a really wonderful experience to be able to peak their interest a little bit. Mainly what they responded to was my instrument and the way that Suraj and I took time to explain a little bit about classical music.
As part of our performance, I asked Suraj to perform a tabla solo while I played a ‘lehra’ – a repeating melody used to keep the beat cycle – while he presented some of the authentic rhythmic patterns of the Delhi Gharana style of tabla playing. It’s jaw-dropping, enjoy!
